First Nest of 2009!

The western Oregon nesting season has begun. While taking Andie for a walk, I noticed an Anna's hummingbird picking lichens from the trunk of an oak tree.

I froze and watched her fly above my head and land on her nest. She worked the material into the nest and stayed on.

She was still on the nest when I returned to take a quick picture (she's in the center of the photo), so she must be incubating her eggs.

Her nest is well concealed by remaining on the oak leaves. It amazes me that such a small bird nests in the winter, when most of the nesting birds are large bodies-species such as great horned bald eagles, and ravens. I hope the weather will be easy on her and her young.

Do you think she was building it and sitting on eggs at the same time? Maybe just adding to the nest? My co-worker saw an Anna's taking nesting material Feb. 8. I have some goat fleece out, but haven't noticed any takers yet. I saw them taking moss last year, but not till March. I am watching when I am home, but I only see a lot of singing and territorial-ness going on. I would love to see a nest!

Hummingbirds add to the nest when they have eggs and nestlings, otherwise, they fall apart in the rain and other elements. The Anna's have a long nesting season, so there is plenty of time for you to get a nest this year!

update: this morning a female landed on my feeder and she was close enough that I could see a bit of what appeared to be cobweb stretching from her bill to her chin. She kept flitting her tongue in and out as we would if we had a hair in our mouth. Maybe she has been busy?!
