Bethany Lake Visit

On Saturday, I took a look around Bethany Lake Park on the border of Hillsboro and Portland.

The pond was full of common mergansers and a mixed flock of Canada and cackling geese loafed under the wires.

At the lake's edge, I spotted a strange white headed bird that reminded me of South American flycatchers I'd seen many years ago. It was actually a leucistic female Brewer's blackbird.

A little bit of blue sky was mixed in with the clouds. By dusk, the skies cleared and temperatures dropped below freezing. The clouds returned today and more rain and flooding are expected. Each winter here seems to have a distinct character and this year's is all about extremes.
